uvindex.sh is a free reference for ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels around the world. It covers more than 123,000 cities across 246 countries and territories, with a dedicated page for each city showing its current UV index, an hour-by-hour forecast, typical UV levels for every month of the year, and an estimate of how quickly unprotected skin can burn.

Why this site exists

Most weather apps treat the UV index as an afterthought — a small number tucked under the temperature, with no context about what it means for your skin. Yet UV exposure is one of the few weather risks you can't feel until the damage is done. You notice heat and rain immediately; sunburn shows up hours later.

uvindex.sh exists to make sun-exposure risk as easy to check as the temperature: whether you're planning a holiday, moving to a new city, heading to a football match or tennis tournament, or just deciding whether today is a sunscreen day.

Who's behind it

uvindex.sh is built and run by Seun Oyebode, an independent software developer. There's no team or company behind the site — Seun designs, codes, and maintains everything himself, from the data pipeline that processes climate records for 123,000+ cities to the pages you're reading now.

Where the data comes from

The site combines two kinds of data. Monthly UV averages, peak-UV months and sunburn-time estimates are derived from historical climate records for each city's location. Live conditions — the current UV index and the hour-by-hour forecast on each city page — come from the Open-Meteo API, an open weather data provider.

Sunburn-time estimates are based on the standard relationship between the UV index and the time it takes fair, unprotected skin to begin to burn. They are general guidance, not medical advice: how quickly you burn depends on your skin type, altitude, reflection from water, sand or snow, and other factors. When in doubt, cover up and use sunscreen.
